Vasanth Nagar, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
Succumbing to the theatre community’s pressure, the Youth Empowerment and Sports Department on Thursday agreed to provide Guru Nanak Bhavan for National School Of Drama( NSD) activities. Drama students were forcibly evicted from the Vasanthanagar premises by Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports officials on Wednesday, citing expiry of the lease agreement.During Eviction, Portraits of great personalities like Shivaram Karanth were dismantled and thrown out. Drama sets too were damaged. The NSD is seeking an extension of the lease for the next 30 years so that they can use the premises for performances. The NSD chapter is ready to redevelop the centre by spending Rs 3 crore. Officials should realise that Bengaluru has received a chapter of NSD after a lot of hard work over the years and there is a need to promote its activities. In 2011, the department had asked NSD chapter to vacate Guru Nanak Bhavan, saying the government had already allotted land near Bengaluru University and it should function from there. However, the then state government intervened in the tussle, averting eviction. NSD authorities say the new campus is not yet ready owing to fund crunch and Guru Nanak Bhavan is essential to carry out its activities.
